Have you ever wished you could make yourself invisible? What about wishing you could fly? How about having super-human strength? It leads me to ask, do we all a some form of superpower?
If a superpower is a “special ability” that is fairly unique, which sets us apart from others, and helps us to excel at everything we do; then I think we all must have at least one. So, what is your superpower? I feel that we all have our own superpowers. What special ability allows you annihilate the competition, beat all odds, and in the end save the world?
If you’ve ever taken the time to reflect on what may be your superpower, perhaps you have come to understand that these super human traits contribute to your success. Maybe even realized that it is rewarding to acknowledge our superpowers, embrace them, and leverage them for our ongoing success.
During Covid healthcare workers were referred to as “hometown heroes”. These heroes demonstrated superpowers which were critical to support societal needs during challenging times. Those of us in the healthcare industry, typically think that everything we do “is all in a days work”, but really do we have superpowers that help others during their most difficult times?
As I reflect on my potential superpowers as an occupational therapist and a leader, they probably are very similar and include empathy, compassion, patience, creativity, and competency. Having superpowers doesn’t necessarily make you a superhero, I think a superhero is someone that combines all the superpowers to just be super.
Funny story, my nickname is Super Cheryl, I did not give it to myself, it was given to me supposedly because of the combination of superpowers I possess and my many accomplishments. If the question was how do you become a superhero, I think the answer would be to combine all your superpower skills, talents, and desires and just try to be a super person. I think the most important part is not to be afraid to own it and acknowledge the fact that you are super. We could go out every day and call ourselves “super” just to give us the confidence to just be “super”.
When you reflect on your top skills, talents, abilities, and desires what emerges that you would consider super? What skills, talents, abilities, and desires do you feel are you unique to you and offer you an advantage to others? What abilities do you think make you a super leader, super person, super individual, super family member, or super friend?
Superpowers lead to super outcomes. With superpowers you may be able to juggle numerous simultaneous roles and duties, achieve many great accomplishments, or assume multiple competing responsibilities. I think I first acknowledged that maybe I am “super” after realizing many of my great outcomes including running a half marathon, being a strong family leader, holding an executive leadership position, successfully acquiring a doctor degree, owning my own business, developing my own blog, and so much more simultaneously and successfully.
So back to my original question. Do we all have some form of superpower? My humble opinion is, YES! Some of us find it early in life, some of us find it later in life, some of us never find it at all. Some of us discover one, some of us discover a couple, some of us discover many. Please reflect on this blog to discover and acknowledge your superpower. The first step to being super is identifying and acknowledging your superpower! So go out there and find your superpower and save the world!
